How did you find your calling for massage and healing? Was there a specific “ah-ha” moment?
I came to Massage Therapy through my husband Pete. Before joining National Holistic Institute (NHI) to study Massage, I was doing general office work. Pete had an interest in massage, so when he went to NHI’s open house, I went along. After listening to the presenter talk about Massage Therapy and what the school was about, I was interested enough to sign-up for a 30 day trial. We started the first day of class on the Eastern approach to massage with a Tai Chi practice and moved on to learn Shiatsu. I was hooked! I loved it since!
“I love working at Kua Body – a team of dear friends in an environment that is built on mutual respect and friendship.” – Lucy Farrell
You grew up in Kenya on a farm. What did you learn that you now apply to your massage practice?
There was always a lot to do on a farm. I always felt that my contribution to the family mattered a lot, and that there was great joy in sharing, not only the hard work, but also the resting times and bounty of the land. I bring this communal spirit to my Kua Body clients and colleagues everyday, and believe in empowering and uplifting others around me to strive for their best.
What makes Kua Body Studios different from other massage venues?
What makes Kua Body different is not only the beautifully appointed space, but our level of passion for your care. Our truly genuine and devoted team bring you our very best selves to each massage session. Our focus while you are in our company is YOU. This is your time and your session, so we do our best to meet your needs for that session, and also to follow up with you the next day if any issues came up during that massage.
Any advice for first time clients who have never had a massage?
First time clients should come in with a desire to tune into their body. Massage brings us awareness into how our body feels. As the therapist is working on them, I would advise clients pay attention to how they are feeling emotionally. As the physical body relaxes to the soothing strokes and movements, the emotional body also lets go of some of the stresses that we have been experiencing.
What is the difference between light and deep pressure during a massage?
The difference between a light and deep massage is really your preference. For example, I can take deep work on my back, but my calves need only light touch because I tend to be sensitive there. So don’t think of one massage session being light or deep, but rather a customized massage that fits your body needs for that day. If for example you did a tough workout and you’re now kind of sore, you might not want the therapist to go too deep into your muscles because that intense pressure will feel uncomfortable.
How do you reboot?
I love to read. I love being lost in a book. I’ve been known to stay up till the wee hours of the morning because I can’t put a good story down. Also binging on Netflix, Food Network and Amazon Prime. Scrolling through Pinterest.
Do you have any important daily wellness rituals or habits?
I do daily meditation.
What is your life philosophy?
That everyone I meet is aspiring to do better. To be better at their job, be better friend, parent or neighbor. To have a better life, a better day or just a better moment. Overall, a better self. I always feel a connection with people because I know I’m trying to always do better, and where I struggle, they struggle too. And so I ask for the grace of patience and compassion in my daily meditation.
As we open up a new year, what are you hoping to see unfold for you?
As we open up the new year, I’m planning on taking a few continuing education classes to add more tools in my “massage toolbox” and depth and breadth to my skills. I’m also planning to engage my community further by putting together a short talk highlighting the benefits of massage therapy as part of one’s health and wellness routine.
